Outdoor Education

This session has an outdoor focus. The campers will spend each day of the week hiking a different trail in the Aspen area. Along with enjoying some of the most beautiful hikes the valley has to offer, the campers will be educated in various aspects of being in the backcountry. Throughout each day the campers will be instructed in various outdoor skills such as orienteering, safety, basic first aid, and leaving no trace.

Orienteering: Each camper will learn how use a compass and map for both orientation and travel in the mountains.

Safety: We will discuss and practice skills such as what to do when lost and how to build a shelter.

First Aid: Topics such as how to avoid getting blisters and how to treat them while hiking, hydration and exposure will be discussed and practiced throughout the week.

Backpacking
3 days 2 nights

This is an extension to our Session III and will be offered to Mountain Kids session III veterans.

To be eligible for Session IV your child must have already participated in at least one Session III, this includes this years Ses III and must get approval from the Director, Jared.

Throughout this session we will be building on and using the skills learned in Session III. The campers will apply various skills such as basic 1st aid in mock settings, move through an orienteering course, backcountry food preperation, camp responsibilities and to leave no trace.

Not only will the campers be gaining usefull backcountry skills they will also be benefiting from the team building opportunies that ODE brings. This ODE program helps to build confidence, pride and positive self-esteem. It is our hope that participants in this program will come out of it excited about who they are and what they have accomplished.

For students that need a great pack for the trip we will provide them with Osprey's kid version backpacking pack. These are a great new addition to Osprey's pack line and we look forward to putting them to use. We will also provide tents and food.

Anyone with tricky dietary needs will need to provide for themselves.
